5 Football Players Who Became Authors

As human beings, we are groomed to believe that some people have brains while others have brawns; there are jocks who go their entire lives asking nerds “could you write an essay for me ?” But the world is a big place, where possibly all kinds of combinations exist, and somewhere in this world a nerd became a jock later on life, and a jock became a nerd. Today we will be talking about the latter jocks who seemingly took up the nerdy profession of writing.

Football is a game that has different meanings in the US and the UK, but the players of each game are renowned and granted quite a lot of fame and glory. The most commonly known names amongst footballers are David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Lionel Messi; these are names of football players you have heard of even if you have no clue about the sport. The English version of football is the more popular one worldwide, with its own world cup in which almost 211 countries participate. American football and English football are both games that have demanded large revenues in their own markets. However, despite the fame and glory that many players get when playing the sport, it is not unheard of for them to change their field, or dab a little in other types of works. Many sportsmen have become actors, and so we were not surprised when we saw the results of footballers who had become authors. If you are a massive football fan, you probably already know of the list. If you are an aspiring writer, who is looking for motivation — if a footballer can write a book, so can you (not saying that footballers can’t write books, but like anyone can write a book if their heart is in the right place and that’s all we are saying)

Since we have not read any of the works these football stars have written, we will refrain from passing any judgments on the work, but you can always go check Goodreads for the ratings and reviews. I think the final takeaway from this piece should be that you can be the highest paid footballer, and you could be amongst the best football writers as well. You do not have to define yourself by the labels that society gives you. The relation between the nerd and the jock is one that has been stereotyped in the media and in literature, but it should not define who you are. You can be anything you want to be, and so if you are a jock who enjoys writing then be both, and if you are a nerd who enjoys football then go ahead and play football. The world is a big place, big enough for all types of people, we would also like our readers to know that if they enjoy doing something, then don’t worry about whether you are extremely good at it, there are chances that you might not be great, but do it anyways.

Okay, so with all that being said and done here are the 5 footballers who became authors (Side note: It is possible that you might have a football writers podcast, through which you have discovered many other writers. These are just the ones we found out about and think they deserve a mention)

1. Francesco Totti

Francesco Totti is number one on our list for a reason, that reason being how he let the haters hate and somehow used their jabs at him to become a better person. Francesco Totti was made fun of by many because he was “too thick in the head”, but he published a joke book about himself and gave proceeds to charity. He has even written entertaining travel guides on the eternal city called “ E mo’ te spiego Roma. La mia guida all’antica Roma (And Now I Explain Rome to You. My Guide to Ancient Rome)” and “Roma 10. In giro per Roma col Capitano,(Roma 10. Around Rome with the Captain)”. His most recent book is about his own life, “Un Capitan” is set to release on 30 September 2019 and is available for preorder in paperback and on kindle on Amazon. While the books we mentioned are his more popular works, you can find other lists of his works too, most of which are in Italian. He has a huge following and is considered a legend in Italian football, his upcoming book is about his struggles and his humble beginnings and his struggle in becoming a footballer; another testament to the fact that nothing worth having comes easy.

2. Steve Bruce

Another man who was not afraid of dabbling in writing and literature, Steve Bruce played for Man Utd and started writing. The very first work of his that got published was in 1994, it was an autobiography called “Heading for Victory”. The book contains some of Bruce’s history, but mainly how Manchester United rose to the top, and the insight into the locker room talks and moments shared with team members.

From 1999–2000, Steve Bruce published a trilogy series based on Steve’s own life, the books were called “Striker” “Defender” and “Sweeper”. The books followed the story of Steve Barnes (this is not a coincidence) who is a football manager (also not a coincidence) and a crime solver. Basically, Steve Barnes discovers a dead body in the locker room and becomes a suspect in the murder, this fuels his investigation to finding the real killer, and this is just the first book. The storyline of Sweeper involves Bruce Barnes, Nazi hunters, and kidnappers. If you want to read the books you can check Amazon, but there are several detailed reviews of the pieces too. Since he was done writing the books, Bruce has recently announced a new autobiography of his that is set to release on the 3 rd of October, 201. The book is named “Theatre of Dreams: Playing, Managing and Everything in Between — My Autobiography”.

3. Frank Lampard jr

Yet another example before your eyes, if you set your mind to it you can achieve it. One of the best football players became the author of children’s books Frank Lampard is a guy who works hard and has so far managed to write 16 books for children. His most notable work is the series “Frankie’s Magic Football”, which follows a boy and his football which takes him on weird adventures. Here is a list of titles from the “Frankie’s magic football” series:

  • Frankie vs The Pirate Pillagers
  • Frankie vs The Rowdy Romans
  • Frankie vs The Cowboy’s Crew
  • Frankie vs The Mummy’s Menace
  • Frankie vs The Knight’s Nasties

  • Game Over!
  • Summer Holiday Showdown

He has also published his autobiography in 2006, called “Totally Frank”. He has managed to garner much love and support for his literary ventures and is considered a fairly successful writer.

4. David Icke

David Icke was not the best footballer, however, he is one of the most creative writers that were once footballers. He is quite a controversial figure and a prominent conspiracy theorist, who has authored more than 15 books. A look at his titles will give you an idea of why he is considered a controversial conspiracy theorist:

  • (1983) It’s a Tough Game, Son!,
  • (1989) It Doesn’t Have To Be Like This: Green Politics Explained,
  • (1991) The Truth Vibrations
  • (1993) Heal the World: A Do-It-Yourself Guide to Personal and Planetary Transformation
  • (1994) The Robot’s Rebellion
  • (1995) … And the Truth Shall Set You Free
  • (1996) I Am Me, I Am Free: The Robot’s Guide to Freedom
  • (1998) Lifting the Veil: David Icke interviewed by Jon Rappoport.
  • (1999) The Biggest Secret: The Book That Will Change the World
  • (2001) Children of the Matrix
  • (2002) Alice in Wonderland and the World Trade Center Disaster
  • (2010) Human Race Get Off Your Knees: The Lion Sleeps No More
  • (2012) Remember Who You Are: Remember ‘Where’ You Are and Where You ‘Come’ From
  • (2013) The Perception Deception: Or … It’s All Bollocks — Yes, All of It
  • (2016) Phantom Self (And how to find the real one),
  • (2017) Everything You Need To Know But Have Never Been Told
  • (2019) The Trigger: The Lie That Changed The World

There is nothing more to say, except maybe it’s not always a good idea.

5. Pepe Mel

Pepe Mel is one of the more distinguished players, who have been in the public eye for a long time now. He became a writer when he wrote and published mystery novels based around the character Veronica Lograft, “The Liar” and “the Road to Afterlife”. He also has other works of fiction, the latest of which is “The Sephardic Key”.

Conclusion

So, this was our list of notable writers who were once footballers, and an attempt to show you that you can be anything you want to be. So if you want to be a writer or a footballer or anything else, just go for it. If you have read any of the books mentioned in this blog, let us know how you liked them.
